Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

United StatesLovely accommodation! We were delighted to discover the beautiful public bath too. Attended the 6am ceremony (and dharma talk) at the temple, which was a real highlight too.

LatviaThere is a curfew at 11. But since you will be waking up early for the prayer it is a good call to go to the bed early!
Such amazing location, wonderful facilities and so so clean. I stayed in Japanese style room and it was so great! Also joining the prayer in the morning was really wonderful experience

United StatesMy son didn’t like the wake up calls for the prayer ceremony but I was fine with it since I usually woke up before the calls. For me personally everything was great.
The location is fantastic, near temples and Ninenzaka where you can find lots of restaurants and shops. The staff is friendly. There is a restaurant in the hotel with wonderful Japanese breakfast. There is a prayer ceremony that guests can attend at the nearby temple, we didn’t get a chance to go to the prayer but the Chionin Temple is breathtaking. It is a nice option to have, you just have to wake up really early to go, wake up call is at 5:20am and I believe services are at 6:00am. We stayed in the Japanese style rooms, very spacious. A relaxing place to stay especially after running around Kyoto with a ton of other tourists.

AustraliaWi-fi didn’t work for us (not a big deal). Onsen was lovely but smelt of chlorine which was a little off-putting.
Peaceful location right next to Chion-in temple but a good location for many other spots. Everything clean and staff friendly. You can choose Japanese style or Western style rooms. Nice gift shop and restaurant. Onsen is clean and spacious. Enjoyed getting up early to attend a service at the temple.

Loved our stay here. In a beautiful area surrounded by trees with a view of the mountains The temple complex was very peaceful and to be staying next to it was special. We walked thru the park to reach the historical areas of Gion or crossed the river to walk into the more modern areas. The room was large, minimalist and futons very comfortable. Onsen amazing . What makes the place special was the reception staff and Manager ,who were kind, caring and professional. They genuinely want you to have an experience to remember. Which we did . I highly recommend staying here in if you are after peace and serenity in our crazy hectic world . Thank you

United StatesVery clean and comfortable. Staff is very helpful and kind. Beds comfortable, elegant feel, great amenities. Coffee shop on lobby level has espresso and plant based milks. There is a beautiful communal bath (not mixed). It’s in the mountains, lots of nature, but only a few feet away from the amazing shopping streets like NininZaka. And only 2 blocks to the bus and public transport. Nice clean bathroom, shower and bathtub in the rooms, beautiful decor.

GermanyWe were a little disappointed that we couldn't use the bath with our tattoos. We have been living in Japan for 10 years now and we are still waiting for the day that tattoos are not seen as an inconvenience or trouble...
The rooms are spacious and very clean. Even though the place is very close to Maruyama park, it's very quiet and relaxing. The staff was incredibly kind! They are able to provide vegan food here, which is wonderful!

Grounds are gorgeous, food is excellent: Highly recommend reserving the kaiseki dinner as well, there's an additional cost but very reasonable. I want to highlight how excellent the staff were - they went above and beyond to fix an issue with my takkyubin delivery on to the next level, can't thank them enough.

IrelandNot really a dislike but…..Breakfast was a traditional nutritious Japanese meal, which was delicious and plentiful but could do with an explanation as how to eat (and which order) for western travellers.
Location was stunning with good bus links. The western style rooms were spotlessly clean and huge in Japanese terms with plenty of bottled water and tea, replenished daily. Staff were extremely polite and very helpful, even holding luggage after checkout as we had an evening flight. The local area was very quiet, the Temple was beautiful, I would recommend the hotel to anyone looking to stay in Kyoto.

United KingdomIf you’re looking for a ‘normal’ hotel, this is not for you. Check in times are limited to a relatively narrow window and there is an 11pm curfew. However, we were looking for something different and were happy to plan around the time constraints (we even welcomed the excuse for a rest), so we loved staying there for one night.
Wow, what an amazing experience it was to stay here! The staff were super friendly and helpful and made all the information really clear, with leaflets to explain things like how to make the futon and how to use the baths. We stayed in a traditional Japanese tatami-floor room with futons and we attended the early-morning Buddhist service. We also loved walking around the park next to the temple as the sun went down, and using the hot bath. These were all such special experiences. We also had a Japanese breakfast in the restaurant (rice, miso soup, pickles, etc) which was unusual for us as Europeans but again, a brilliant experience. We had assumed that the breakfast would be vegan because of it being a Buddhist temple, but that was not the case. However, when we explained that we don’t eat animal products, they quickly swapped a few things for plant-based options without any issues.
