Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

SwitzerlandIf you are a gaijin, you gonna have the gaijin room. And Tatami is not perfectly clean because Tatami could not be clean. So alway step with sock or clean shoes. I know that but if it's not said to other tourist, Tatami gonna have dirt. Personnal could explain this to help to keep the room clean.
Typical traditionnal ryokan. The bed is adaptable with second couch if it's too rude. Kimono and tea include.

NetherlandsThe staff is sincerely kind and friendly. The ryokan has a superb location in my opinion. The room was very nice, although the ventilation shaft cover in the bathroom was broken, but that wasn't a big issue for me

AustraliaThe futons were a little thin and hence not the most comfortable night’s sleep. For the room, the rate was over priced. It is Sakura season, but at almost $500 per night for a bare room, the value was lacking.
The front desk staff were lovely and helpful. Excellent location, walking distance from two train stations, the market, convenience stores and restaurants.

United StatesThey could improve on cleanliness. We needed to stack several futures ns as they were too thin. Although the photos made this look like a traditional ryokan, it is more a small hotel with Japanese style rooms.
The room was spacious by Japanese standards, especially for the location. The location was excellent. Close to public transport and many interesting tourist attractions and great restaurants.

United StatesOnly one card key per room no matter how many people are in there. The late night person just said "Japanese style" no matter what we asked and pretty much just shooed us off but others were very pleasant.
Kyoto Ryokan Hirashin is an older facility located within walking distance to Nishiki Market. It has large tatami rooms and a public furo/bath downstairs. Great experience but if you are not used to the bed on the floor, it may be hard for you. The shikibutons are hard, although I was fine with it. Think of them as exceptionally FIRM. Rooms had own toilet/tub shower. Good experience for the price. We paid for breakfast which was simple and meatless. Hotel let us keep our luggage there after 10:00 checkout so we could run around Kyoto without having to worry about them.

United StatesI didn't receive any communication prior to check-in, despite sending some questions. This was also the only time that my main credit card didn't work in Japan, never found out why.
This is located very close to the local market. We should have booked a couple of nights here due to its location near the bus stop and Nishiki market.

AustraliaWe went there during the busiest time of the year (Sakura) so the prices were a little high for the facilities. The bathroom had a strange smell that was a little off putting.
Perfectly located, very clean Japanese style accommodation. They provided lots of extra bedding and the room was very spacious.

United StatesCleanliness of the rooms, communication with hotel staff - we had several emails that went unanswered before we arrived. Felt really expensive for what we got.
There was a great breakfast place just across the street that was really the best part of this stay. Hotel seemed old and dirty and past its prime.

United KingdomThe property was very old which is understandable but very far from what you see in the pictures online. The staff did not speak a word in english which made communication a bit difficult. Overall it was okayish but definitely not worth the money.
Location was good next to Nishiki Market and local restaurants and cafes.

Australiaoutadated and needs a really decent refurbishment. mould in bathrooms, the opposite of what you’d expect from Japanese cleanliness and tidiness. seems very stuck in the past, mid 80’s and not a dollar spent since. futons uncomfortable, staff speak no English, really bad value for money. we spent half as much at hotels that we enjoyed three times more in our 2 weeks holiday. I’d stay somewhere else, or if really seeking a ryokan experience splash out and spend a lot of money on something really high end. this place is not it.
the location wasn’t bad
