Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

AustraliaWe had a wonderful stay at Jizokan Matsuya Ryokan. The location could not be beat so close to Zenkoji temple. The ryokan itself is gorgeous - very traditional and comfortable. The beds were quite firm but the doonas were so cosy. Our room was really spacious. We had dinner and breakfast included which I recommend trying at least for one night. The food requires you to be a bit adventurous. It was also very plentiful!

AustraliaFelt a bit unsafe as the steps to the room were steep and narrow. Being old and traditional, you would expect that
The Ryokan was just what we expected. Staff excellent and friendly. The accommodation was authentic. That's what we loved about it.

SingaporeIt's very hard near the Zenkoji temple and right in the middle of the shopping street. Go for the keiseiki dinner. Very delicious and value for money.

United StatesThis is a wonderful traditional ryokan right on the main street of the temple. The location could not have been better for sightseeing and the charm of Nagano - though it is a 20-25 minute walk to the train station. Kind, helpful staff, clean, charming, quiet rooms in a Japanese style. Onsen on site. Unique, traditional Japanese breakfast available for a fee. We loved this experience.

New ZealandWhilst English was difficult for some of the staff we still managed to communicate okay. Overall there is nothing negative I can say.
An absolutely wonderful place to stay to experience a traditional Japanese Ryokan. The breakfasts were varied each day and beautifully presented. The fact that the Ryokan is located at the start of the Zenkoji temple complex made it even better. It was only 3km from the train station so okay walking without bags. The advantage is because of its position you could walk just a few meters to pick up a taxi to the station which only cost 1200Y.

United KingdomA fantastic Ryokan next to the Zenkōji temple. The rooms were spotless, beautifully traditional and lovely and warm on a snowy March night. The Onsen was a great treat after a cold walk to see the monkeys and we loved the traditional breakfast. If you don't eat in it was a short walk to an array of restaurants, and there are some nice little shops right outside.

United KingdomGreat location - in pedestrianised area right by the temple entrance - built on the original site of the first temple - super easy to go to early morning prayers from - very clean and functional rooms - typical ryokan style. Staff were very graciuous and helpful and even waited up to let us in as we took longer to get there than originally planned and helped us to find the parking.

United StatesThe water for the public bath was only lukewarm but that’s a very minor complaint.
The location is fantastic as it’s centrally located to the heart of Nagano. It’s a very short walk to Zenkoji Temple and also not far to reach either the local commuter train station or a bus stop. The staff is very friendly and extremely helpful. They helped make us feel right at home. The food is also very tasty. I would recommend having breakfast every day of your stay.

Also lots of great street foods, temple nearby and still close enough to the Station. Staff was super kind and we got a little sweet treat every day which was very tasty. The onsen was great too and our room was also perfect! It was clean, enough room and felt very authentic to us. Would definitely stay here again!

AustraliaThe location is perfect and close to transport, the Zenkoji Temple, shops, food, restaurants. Beautiful traditional Japanese accommodation with very comfortable beds and rooms. It has a small onsen perfect for the size of the property. Only for guests so it is mostly private. The owners and staff are so kind and we loved visiting for the second year in a row. Thank you all!
