Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

AustraliaI think the hotel needs a sign in English too as it was very difficult to locate . Also the dinner is very expensive.
We absolutely loved Suiun. The special attention to detail is superb as the choosing of a kimono and the pajamas is fabulous and we so enjoyed wandering around in our kimonos for breakfast and dinner. The room was huge and our private onsen was spectacular .in fact the variety of onsens was incredible and we tried every one. The breakfast was amazing and too much food but tasty and the free beer much appreciated.

JapanSuiun was an absolutely incredible experience. I can speak some Japanese but they also had staff who could speak in English to assist us. There were a lot of free inclusions to our stay: a yukata to wear in the hotel, multiple drink and snack bars, and free late night ramen. Our room was so clean, spacious, and beautiful—we enjoyed having a private open-air onsen bathtub to ourselves too. Their multi-course breakfast and dinner meals were so delicious and filling. We enjoyed their onsens so much: there are three private ones and one public one, all of which were very traditional in design. Suiun met all of our needs and went above and beyond. I want to come back here on a regular basis. It is only a 7 minute from Gora station.

United StatesThe place is wonderful, very peaceful and beautiful. The food is incredible. I wish the price were a little bit lower because compared to other ryokans is quite high.

United KingdomThis is a great hotel for those who want a real Japanese feel to their stay. From the moment we arrived (shoes off please) we were warmly greeted, offered a kimono to wear and shown to your authentic Japanese ryokan-style bedroom with its own private onsen. The well-equipped room was supplied with beer and water as well as tea and real-coffee beans and a grinder. At 10pm free ramen was available in the lounge where you could also help yourself to draft beer, coffee, tea etc. The breakfast was outstanding for those who want to try new foods, whether you opted for the Japanese breakfast menu or the western one. Tip - allow extra time in your schedule in order to savour the many courses offered. If you didn’t want the elaborate menu a range of bread/croissant/pastries were available too. The hotel has larger onsen for use by its guests - one for men, one for women and three smaller ones which can be booked (if it’s not in use you can use it). We chose to use the onsen ion the balcony of our room (for which there was a small but unexpected charge ) Thoroughly recommend this hotel if you are exploring the area, planning on using the Hakone Ropeway (cable car) to the lake for (if you are lucky!) views of Mt Fuji. Another great attraction is the open air art museum (15 min walk or 1 stop on rail) with a wide range of sculptures, a Picasso exhibition and lots to interest the children too.

United KingdomWe loved every bit, every little detail, honestly we have stayed in many wonderful 5 star hotels and this beats them all! The staff we so attentive from the moment we walked in. The place was spotless. The dinner was incredible. They even gave us a honey moon gift. The onsens were heaven! All the extras and amenities and details were thought of. The location was great. We kept saying we just can’t believe it isn’t a higher star rating. It was just so wonderful and we wish we could have stayed longer!

United StatesWe loved our 1 night stay here; everything was amazing, the room, service and amenities were wonderful. Next time we will book a room without the private bath because they have outdoor private baths for use. We had their traditional dinner and breakfast included and what an experience that was!

United StatesLoved the property and the staff. Only thing I would like to suggest is to maybe cater to vegetarians as well. I understand that the meals are all about seafood and meat but many people that do come to visit the area are also vegetarian. The Just a suggestion.

United StatesNothing. Maybe a lesson on how to tie a yukata!
As soon as you walk through the entry garden into the lobby, take off your shoes, walk across the tatami floors and enter the world of Suiun, you know you’re in for something exceptional. The spacious rooms are graciousl with attention to detail, the private onsen in the room with the mountains in the distance were a treat. The kaiseki dinner was delicious and presented beautiful as was the Japanese breakfast. What makes Suiun so special though are the people. So kind, helpful, friendly and professional all at once - a winning combination. A fantastic experience.

IsraelNote that it's quite a climb from gora station, and also, we tried traditional Japanese breakfast for the first time, and we didn't really enjoy that - but they have western breakfast as well, that we didn't have.
We loved this place. So many extras and free amenities, so welcoming. Of course the in-room open air bath (onsen) was so nice, and the room itself was huge and beautiful. We had a small issue with our booking, but the hotel managed it amazing. I can't recommend this place enough. If you're visiting Hakone, don't consider anywhere else

SwitzerlandThe staff wasn‘t able to deliver on our few easy requests (fruits for breakfast, taxi booking). Maybe it was due to the language barrier but for the price I think you can expect a certain standard.

Everything about our experience at this Ryokan was exceptional. The rooms are spacious, very clean and have great amenities such freshly ground coffee, a selection of teas and cold drinks. The private onsen was very special and had a wonderful view of the mountains. The food was delicious at both breakfast and dinner, using seasonal ingredients, expertly prepared. Finally the service was faultless. Staff are incredibly kind and helpful. Overall it was a complete pleasure staying at this ryokan.
