Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

United StatesThe living room was a little uncomfortable with no comfy chairs or couch, but that is probably normal for ryokan accommodations.
Central location, very nice bath, comfy beds, quiet location, wonderful owners, staff, and restaurant suggestions.

The location fantastic, central but quiet. The room absolutely gorgeous. Bed so comfortable, Bath amazing. Sauna - incredible. Breakfast very natural and tasty. Owner and staff top notch - extremely nice and attentive. Wonderful recommendations where to eat in the lovely neighborhood. Everything about this place is about subtle beauty and excellence. AustraliaSuper friendly owner and staff, beautifully designed hotel with a small number of rooms , lots of thoughtful details. Definitely one of the best hotels I have stayed at. I love the combination of modern and traditional Japanese design for both its interior and exterior. I love the tatami area and study space! But also the bed and the bath were so comfortable! We love everything about the place. Great location - next to a train station and not from most things - 15 minutes walk to the busiest parts of Kyoto. A perfect place to stay and relax as well as explore Kyoto.

United StatesWe cannot think of anything that we didn't like. We'd have to visit a few more times...but I doubt we'd be able to come up with something we didn't like.
Tamao was a beautiful choice in our travels to Japan and such a lovely setting from which to explore Kyoto. The proprietress has recently opened the lovely "Inn". We were so pleased to walk in and immediately smell the fragrant woods used in it's construction. Very calming and lovely with gracious design touches. Best walking into the entry room, a shared space, was the warm greeting from Miko. We were invited to take a seat at the lovely dining table next to the fireplace and checked in. Then a few steps across a garden courtyard brought us to our up/down unit. The unit was fabulous with wood everywhere, heated floors, spacious bathroom with garden pocket window. Upstairs was the seating area next to the bed and cleverly tucked away desk. My husband who is an Architect loved the design details and kept walking around the unit taking pictures and just enjoying the lovely workmanship. The space was stellar. But it was the staff and management that made our stay so memorable. Passing in and out of Tamao through the shared "living room" we were always greeting with warmth and a smile. We were interested in the story behind the building of the Inn. The owner, Naly and staff were receptive and excited to share their stories and answer many questions about the city we were visiting. Koji, who manned the desk several days of our 6 day stay, was very helpful booking us a visit to Katsura Villa. He also anticipated alternatives for our return journey to Tokyo when snow potentially threatened our chosen means of travel via Shinkansen. Ayako had a keen interest in what we were hoping to see during our stay. She shared excitement and ideas which fueled our wanderings in Kyoto. Breakfasts were simple, satisfying and accompanied by pleasant conversation with Naly and her staff. Loved the Amakaze yogurt served every morning. We certainly hope to return one day.
