The hostel proposed several activities during the week, including a volunteer opportunity. I was expecting a much rowdier atmosphere but in the end it was just the right amount. Even on margarita nights, the noise from the common room comes down around 11pm. Everybody in the front desk was super helpful each time I asked a question. Thanks to Luke and Maddie for their friendliness and guidance.

The parking situation was annoying. Overnight parking works for in town, but it's a bit of a problem where to put the car during the day if not using the car. Not unsolvable but just sinks time. I ended up switching to a hotel with a parking lot because of this but otherwise loved the Howzit.

Room, shower, kitchen, checked bags, everything I needed

Non of the rooms have luggage lockers!!! According to one of the employees, they are in the process of ordering and replacing all the current beds with bunk beds with bottom slide out lockers. The washrooms and showers are all separate from the dorm rooms, I don’t think they have ensuites; and the shower stalls were a bit tight…Finally, the kitchen is a bit lackluster, missing quite a bit of kitchen utensils. The fridges are residential fridges and not the commercial double French door fridges so space is limited…I think all in all these shouldn’t be major deal breakers, all the pros certainly outweighs the cons. These are merely criticisms that can be improved upon, but won’t greatly affect your overall stay at Howitz.

Big shoutout to Ela at the front desk for being such a kind and fun human being to be around with. The lobby had tons of space to hangout and lounge in. There are free and some paid activities and tours organized by the hostel every single day. The hostel is pretty central to most of the attractions and other cities you will visit and has ample free street parking nearby. The demographic of the backpackers range from early 20s to mid 30s; so there’s a friend for everyone. They provide free pancakes in the morning and that is a great time to meet people and make new friends. I will definitely come back and stay here again.

The beds are a little unstable and make noise every time someone moves. The rooms are very small and quite hot since they face the neighboring building. The ceiling fan and air conditioning are quite old and loud. There is not much available in the area as far as grocery stores or food choices. Just remember to buy stuff before you come back to the hostel.

Place is very clean and well maintained, especially the kitchen. The fridges and cabinets are large enough for all the guests. There are entire sections of both fridges and cabinets with free food available to all guests. The common areas are spacious and lively but not chaotic. Large tables are great for eating and gathering with other guests. All the bedrooms are upstairs, keeping it quiet for those who need to rest. Bathrooms are generally clean and again there is a basket with free stuff for guests (insect repellent, sun lotion, whatever previous guests leave). There is a full array of excursions offered. Free chocolate chips pancakes and free coffee for breakfast.

the wifi was good when it worked but it kept disconnecting from our phones and wouldn't let us reconnect.

the hostel was clean and the staff were really friendly and the chocolate pancakes each morning were delicious! They also provided a lot of day trip (but make sure you wake up before 0600 to sign up each day) but the energy was good and the pool table was much appreciated.

Overall quite clean apart from some guests leaving their rubbish lying around in the common area, including full toe nail clippings left on a stool!!These were there for over 24 hours- I know I took a photo. Also a greedy person took some of our (labelled) food from kitchen. Perhaps hanging a nicely worded flyer about the kitchen/clean up fairy not residing at Howzit

The staff- mostly volunteers. Had tons of energy & enthusiasm for sharing the vibe of Maui. In particular Bri, Kara & the cool Aussie Georgie shared local tips & assisted with all sorts of queries- always in a friendly way with a smile. They are to be commended. The bed was comfortable, our room quite soundproof. Well stocked kitchen & bathrooms were plenty. Also the excursion we went on to Iao valley was great.

It’s a little far from downtown and the beach. But has a dedicated paid parking so it’s essy to get around if you have a vehicle.

Great open space to hang out with A/C and social events in the night. Bunch of facilities with all the necessities — no queues. Best mattress I remember from my hostel experience. Exceptional people culture and very friendly staff!

The house rules weren’t explained on check in, such as cleaning dishes or storing food. I don’t even think I got a tour of the place, but it was a relatively small space and the other guests were very helpful.

This was my first time staying in a hostel in the US and it was such an amazing experience. The rooms were clean and the staff did a wonderful job of keeping it tidy. The hostel has a group chat on WhatsApp that’s incredibly useful for communicating with other guests/ staff and coordinating daily activities. I loved that the staff made chocolate chip pancakes and coffee for the guests every morning. It was a culmination of all these little things that has made me recommend this place to all friends and future travelers of Maui.
