Hotel in Bukit Lawang
Located in Bukit Lawang, Rambai Tree Jungle Lodges features a garden, terrace, massage services, and free WiFi throughout the property. We are 2 friends in the autumn of our life. We went on the jungle trek and stayed overnight. Our guide, Kinol was so helpful and went at our pace. Are, his outsider carried the food. We stopped at 11 for delicious fruit. For lunch we had chicken, fried rice, tomato and cucumber. The camp on the river was well set out. Dinner was different curries.. Delicious! We saw orangutans including a big male. Different species of monkey and other interesting Forest creatures. Kinol had good eyes. We returned by a raft of big tyres joined together.. Very exciting..

Very peaceful and quiet during Ramadan. Stuff was very helpful, you have drinking water included in the price for the whole period of stay. No hot water running in the shower but you don't actually need it as it is quite warm. And last but not least the place is very very green, lots of plants, trees and flowers, a proper jungle vibe. It is what you see in the pics.

Medan itself is really only a gateway to North Sumatra. A place to stay on your way to or from the other places worth visiting. There is however a vibrant food culture which in itself is worth sampling.
Medan is the main city in North Sumatra and the closest city to Kuala Namu International airport, which is about 32km out of town. I have been a regular visitor to North Sumatra over the past few years so have had occasion to spend a few nights there each year. It is not that Medan is a bad city ....... it is just that there is nothing of great interest there and it isn't at all attractive. My tip ....... and what I do ......... is spend a night or 2 there then get out to North Sumatra's main attractions. (Lake Toba, Berestagi, Bukit Lawang) Having said that I find the people in Medan friendly enough and it is a good place to exchange money before you head to Lake Toba where money change options / ATM's are less reliable and the rates aren't so good.
One of the most humble and kind people in Sumatra stays in and around padang !! And here people have traffic sense ! Love padang n especially padang kitchen not to be missed the best food buffet you will have in Indonesia and spicy as well :)
Medan is a necessary transit point for onward travel in Sumatra. Unfortunately it is blighted by chaotic roads and very poor urban planning. It's new rail link to and from the new airport is a wonderful initiative. Hopefully more such public transport plans are in the offing.
All Sumatra has fantastic nature! This place is special, the restaurants and guest houses are nicely set by the river and the walks around adventure. This is the place where you can see the Orangutans in the forest and that is an unforgettable experience!
A city for the people of Sumatra. A good place to understand normal life and meet people who are happy to assist you.
If I travel again to West Sumatra I will go straight to the sea or islands without staying a night in Padang. The city is crowded, polluted. On the other hand it is a good place to try local randang dish and to see hundreds of traditional roof tops
Just passing through, it seems hectic, full of hasstle and stinky (but all transport links round Sumatra can be found here!)
It’s more of a town than a city. Compared to cities in Java, Padang is relatively smaller and less developed. But definitely good to explore outside of Java and see Sumatra, which is a much larger island. Roads around Padang are smaller but traffic is OK.
Padang is a large city on the west coast of Sumatra. Very good access to the ocean and the mountains. Everyone know about Masukan Padang, Padang Fiod. Very good and varied. Padang is also the gateway to the Mentawai Islands with some of the best surfing in the world
Bukittinggi
Central location - 2 minutes walking to the main Square, cafes and restaurants and landmarks. The hostel is new and clean, the rooms have only one bed, and the shared bathrooms on the corridor. There's a table with free tea and coffee on the corridor. The stuff is very friendly and helpful even though they speak little English. They helped me with a taxi to Padang at an incredible low price (I wouldn't have gotten this with any travel agency). Internet is very fast and good. The best place I stayed in Sumatra so far.
We spend the first and last night of our holiday at Hotel Deli River and definitely recommend to start your Sumatra trip here. It’s a warm Indonesian welcome with an European touch. The rooms are very clean and spacious, perfect for a rest after a long flight. But the highlight for us was the garden; it is amazing with several places to relax in private. The onsite restaurant has a beautiful architecture where we had the best rendang during the whole trip! The staff was also very friendly and helpful during our stay.
Excellent swimming pool with plenty of space for adults and children. . Rooms are very clean and the floor staff are attentive and hardworking. Good location walking distance from Centre point shopping mall and railway station. Recommend exploring the old Chinatown on the far side of Centre point. Some great family run restaurants. Next to hotel, there is an old Methodist church and further down the street a Buddhist temple. Sumatra has an interesting history of adopting different religions and cultures.

The Sapo Karo Rest House is exceptionally welcoming. We had only one day and wanted to see the volcano, hot springs and get transfer to Medan. We managed to plan everything in advanced through WhatsApp, and ended up seeing beautiful sunrise from the top of volcano. During the drive to Medan we stopped for great Javanese meal, and driver from rest house gave us good advice for better stay in Medan (after encounter with bad hotel in Medan). It was our best short stay during visit of Sumatra. Thanks again :)
Location in the gorge surrounded by padi and walking distance of town and active Marapi volcano was spectacular. Very friendly staff and hotel partner, Jaka, who drove transfer and a day excursion and took a great interest in our century-old family connection with Sumatra. Brilliant, if highly eccentric , buildings and room with great view. Limited but very good evening menu, drinks etc.

The breakfast at smileys is just stunning!!! Best breakfast you will find in Sumatra with self-made bread and banana-cupcakes. The room was big and clean with a nice terrace and a beautiful view. The hostel is located around 15 min walk from the center away, near to a nice viewpoint where you can see the sunset. Smiley ans his wife are such nice people! I would definitely go againg!
This is truly a hidden gem in west Sumatra. The place exceeds all expectations as it is brand new, very modern and carefully cleaned every day. The breakfast offered by the host is very complete and flexible. And apart from all that, the host is an amazing person and will help you out with pretty much anything you might need with your trip to West Sumatra and Indonesia in general.
Medan
We had a lovely time here when we landed in Sumatra, so much that we came back again when we were leaving Sumatra. The place is an oasis outside of the city. The staff are friendly and helpful with lots of advice on onward travels in the area and across Indonesia. The rooms are clean and comfortable, the garden is beautiful and the breakfast is yummy. Would highly recommend.
We met the wonderful Deni and Robby here. They showed us around Sumatra. We had a great and fun time with them touring around. Two wonderful guys we won't ever forget. Back to the hotel. Rooms are adequate, pizza is nice and the personnel is lovely. Anything can be arranged (transport, tour, etc). There is a good view of Sibayak and Sinabung on clear days.
Perfectly located for trekking the Gunung Leusser National Park. Hotel Orangutan is only a couple of minutes away from the entry gate of the home of the Sumatran Orangutans. Besides its perfect location, Hotel Orangutan has the most wonderful staff one could imagine and hires the best guide (—> Jerry) for an unforgettable trekking experience in the jungle.
This is my first time visiting West Sumatra. One of the cities I visited was the city of Padang. while in Padang I stayed at @amarishotelpadang by @amarishotels The hotel location is very strategic in the city center. Nice hotel, friendly service, affordable prices and delicious breakfast. This hotel is highly recommended for those of you who will visit Padang.
Tuk Tuk
The location and setting of the homestay is amazing just on the lake and the wooden restaurant is really nice to chill in. I also had my first hot shower in Sumatra after 7 days which was great as not many homestays have hot water! The food served in the restaurant is also decent too if you're craving some western food again!

Absolutely everything! Maybe I had different standards coming from a jungle trekk, but for the price I paid this is one of the best hotels I‘ve stayed in (in Sumatra) so far. The food is amazing and staff speaks english really good. They helped me with everything and even spontaneously organised a Mount Sibayak sunrise tour.
Great hotel, near the center of Medan. Large nice rooms, large beds. Room equipped with fridge, electric kettle, safe. Great breakfast buffet, many dishes to choose from. Very nice pool. Hotel worth recommending. Helpful staff, you feel like you are at home. I recommend the hotel, the best we have been to in Sumatra.
Bukit Lawang
Very friendly and accommodating owners and great view of the rice paddies from the windows (that covered all the walls) of my room. Lived the true Sumatran shower experience: sluicing buckets of water down my body felt SO refreshing in the humid warm weather. Also, loved the porch area just outside of the hotel!
We stayed 2 x one night with our family of four during our holiday through Sumatra and had a very good stay. Large clean appartement, friendly staff, good Indonesian breakfast, second time when we had to leave early they offered a take away breakfast. Also handy is the CIMB bank opposite of the hotel.
Bukit Lawang
I had a wonderful experience at the Sumatra Thomas Leaf Monkey Hotel. They helped to arrange everything for me. The jungle trek was great and we were fed so much food that we could not finish it all. Brian explained so many things to us and we got to see many animals.
Great hotel, lovely helpful staff and very clean. Large room and comfortable bed. Nice to hang around the pool. Massive buffet breakfast (extra cost). Good place to stay for a couple of nights or on arrival/departure to Sumatra. Good value for money.
this hotel is located near universitas sumatra utara and few others university , if you just want to stay here these universities for convenient sake .. is ok .. otherwise , nothing special about it
Overall fine hotel, location is good near the train station and some of the very few sights that Medan has to offer. Ideal for a stop-over to travel to other parts of Northern Sumatra.
