Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

SpainThey were really insistent with the "don't make noise" policy... And yet our neighbors were really noisy... There is a locked "paper" door that separates apartments, and blocks no noise at all. Once night we had drunk Japanese neighbours, and another night there was a cry-all-night baby... Not ideal. Also, the toilet seat was tiny (even for Japanese standards). The locking code and the key to the apartment are very flimsy (our neighbors closed it wrong twice... And the lock is one push from opening, not even a kick). I know Japan is really safe, but it was a bit unnerving...
Very big apartment. Very classic Japanese feeling. We enjoyed it a lot.

New ZealandFantastic location. Quick walk from Kyoto station and even quicker walk to the subway. Very good spot to explore Kyoto from. Loved being able to stay in a traditional Machiya house. It was a really cool experience but we were with young children which can make trying to be quiet tricky.

KuwaitBefore entering the ryokan visitors are explained that it is important to be quiet. As I stayed for a few days some visitors still had to adjust to this way of co-habiting, but it was really minimal and not really disturbing I would say.
I loved staying in the ryokan as this was my first time. The breakfast was good. I loved renting the outdoor sento next door. The neighbourhood is very convenient. Renting a bicycle is recommended. Only thing is you need to consider where to park your bicycle.

AustraliaNarrow stairs, uncomfortable bedding on the floor, rips in the rice paper window coverings, tiny bathroom and toilet, noisy toilet flush like a train station, only one washing machine and clothes dryer. Inefficient clothes dryer, needed 2hours to dry a small load of clothes. Air conditioner wasn’t really cold. No seats, only 2 flat cushions for 3 people. Minimal hanging facilities in the room for clothes.
Friendly staff, traditional surroundings.

United StatesLocation was just ok, a bit far to the train and buses. Part of that issue is that Kyoto's public transit system isn't as good as some other Japanese cities. Biggest drawback is that earplugs are a must-have. The walls are thin and even normal volume conversations can be heard.
The multi-room units are excellent for groups.

BulgariaNothing comes to mind really. Maybe only to mention more clearly about how the check in process is done - that it's done in a building near the apartment itself, not at the place itself.
The location of the place is great. The coziness of the place is also something I enjoyed a lot. It had all the necessary ammenities we needed. And the book provided to us by the owners about the places to visit and what to do was great - I really enjoyed using it.

CanadaYour stay may depend on the kind of neighbours you have in the rooms above and to the side - as they will mention repeatedly, noise travels in this type of house. The toilet in the private room does not have a washlet - which would be fine but it does get a bit cold in the washroom in this style of house. Some things e.g. the cups/kettle could stand to be updated, the guide they provide could also be updated, some of the prices etc. are a bit outdated.
A unique experience in a machiya house. My partner and I slept well here, found the futons comfortable and had a pleasant stay. Because it is an older building, it was the roomiest place we stayed at compared to typical hotel rooms. It is located in a quiet residential area, about 15/20 minutes walk to Kyoto station, food and other entertainment. It is also about a 20 minute walk from Nishiki market, a common tourist attraction. There are some good facilities for being a ryokan e.g. private bathroom option, fridge (not very cold) and luggage storage We had a great dinner here; bought a bunch of food from a nearby supermarket (Lobia) and had a great meal sitting on the tatami at the sit down table.

Estonia- Cold. Especially at night, very cold. (And Im coming from Estonia). The airconditioner was running almost always on when we're in the place and awake, but at night it freezes so in the morning we have to reheat the bedrooms (upstairs) at least for half an hour - Staff English level could be a bit better, needed Google Translate for extraordinary communications (ie questions) - Be careful about the hole between the stairs and the door when locking. We dropped our keys there and it's impossible to retrieve :( (However staff was very helpful and key replacement price was alright)
- Whole place to ourselves, very private - Generally very comfy - Bathtub and bathroom - Amazing kitchen, everything included - Lots of extra stuff (i.e. pillows, slippers) - Very helpful and kind staff
